Mirabel Tolliver, the beautiful and charismatic leader of the Church of the Holy Giver, is far more than a charismatic spiritualist. She is an arcane researcher who is attempting to unlock a method of powering devices with the life force of others. The church is simply a means to gather the "sacrifices" her research demands.
Lady Mirabel has bound these poor people to her with a combination of thaumaturgy and guile. She preys upon those in the throes of despair, offering hope to the hopeless. When she captures their hearts and minds completely, she destroys them. She is assisted by Salazar Poe, her most loyal follower, and by the fanatical devotion of her 75 disciples, including Lawrence Oakley. Lady Mirabel intends to lead her followers out to a specially prepared spot in the Skyspire Mountains and, through sorcery and her personal magnetism, drive them into an ecstatic death frenzy. There she has set up an immense machine built to capture and contain the life force of the dying.
